China National Standard of Activated Carbon

1. Moisture The moisture shall not exceed 8% by weight of Granular Activated Carbon contained in the packaging container or by weight of Granular Activated Carbon delivered by the supplier in bulk transportation.

Due to the environmental conditions that are difficult to control by the supplier, the moisture of Activated Carbon may increase in bulk transportation and is allowed to exceed 8%.

2. Apparent density shall not be less than 0.36g/ cm³ , and the density (pounds) of bituminous Activated Carbon after reflux and drainage shall be calculated by multiplying the apparent density by 62.43x0.85.

3. Particle size distribution The Granular Activated Carbon left on the largest sieve shall not be more than 15%, and the Granular Activated Carbon passing the smallest sieve shall not be more than 5%. The particle size range may be specified by the purchaser.

4. The effective particle size must be within the range specified by the purchaser. Granular Activated Carbon is usually 0.35~1.5mm. (Pressed Activated Carbon is not applicable)

5. Uniformity factor The uniformity factor is the ratio of the size of the sieve through which exactly 60% of a representative sample of the filter material passes to the size of the sieve through which exactly 10% of the same sample is used. If not otherwise specified by the purchaser, the uniformity coefficient of Granular Activated Carbon shall not be greater than 2.1 after reflux and drainage in the filter.(Not applicable to pressed Activated Carbon)

6. Abrasion strength The average particle size retention rate of Granular Activated Carbon shall not be less than 70% when measured by stirring method or abrasion test according to ball and disc method.

7. Surface area The surface area of Granular Activated Carbon shall not be less than 500㎡/g when measured by the nitrogen BET method.

8. Pore volume The total pore volume of Granular Activated Carbon shall not be less than 0.80 cm³/g when measured by a combination of mercury replacement and helium replacement method.

9. Water-soluble ash Measured by water extraction method, water-soluble ash shall not exceed 4%.

10. The iodine value shall be determined by ASTM 4607 method, and the iodine content of Granular Activated Carbon shall not be less than 500mg/g.

11. General impurities Should not contain impurities that have toxic and harmful effects on the health of users of Activated Carbon treated Water.

12. Special impurities It should not contain special impurities that exceed the limit range specified in the `Chinese Pharmacopoeia`.
