Ash Cotent Determination of Coconut Shell Activated Carbon

"Ash" is an important standard item in the chemical property testing of Activated Carbon, and is included in the evaluation index of Activated Carbon selection. Among the current international testing methods for Activated Carbon, only the determination of ash content and pH value can barely be classified as chemical property analysis.

When the "chemical properties" of Activated Carbon are considered to be "chemical purity" (this tendency is mostly found in the Activated Carbon application industry), the ash content and volatile matter content are sometimes included in the chemical property testing of Activated Carbon.

What Is The Ash Content of Activated Carbon?

The chemical composition of Activated Carbon contains two kinds of substances besides carbon, one is the elements bonded by chemical bonds, such as oxygen and hydrogen, and the other is ash, which varies with the type of Activated Carbon.

For example, the ash content of Coconut Shell Activated Carbon is about 3.5%, which contains oxides of potassium, aluminum, silicon, sodium and iron, as well as small amounts of magnesium, calcium, boron, copper, silver, tin and traces of lithium, gallium and lead. The relative content of ash in Activated Carbon increases with the degree of carbon activation of raw materials.

The ash content of Coconut Shell Activated Carbon is less than 3%, while the ash content of Coal Activated Carbon is as high as 20% to 30%. The sulfur content of Activated Carbon is relatively low, and sulfide should not be detected in Activated Carbon of good quality.

Normally, when we say ash powder of Activated Carbon, we mean the intrinsic ash powder. Ash can be mainly divided into acid soluble matter and alkali soluble matter. Ash mainly includes: SiO2, Al₂O₃, Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, TiO2, SO₃, K₂O, Na₂O and O₁₀P₄.

Test Methods of Wooden Activated Carbon - Determination of Ash Content

Test Methods of Wooden Activated Carbon - Determination of Ash Content. GB/T12496.3-1999

The sample is ashed at (650±20)for several hours, and the ash content is expressed as a percentage of the original sample mass. 30m porcelain crucible is placed in a high temperature electric furnace and cauterized at (65±20)until constant weight (about 1h), the crucible is placed in a desiccator, cooled for 30min, and weighed (weighed to 0.1mg).

Weigh 1 g of the dried specimen crushed to 71 μm (weighed to 0.1 mg) in a 30 mL porcelain crucible that has been cauterized to a constant weight. The crucible was put into a high temperature electric furnace at a temperature of not more than 300, the lid of the crucible was opened, and the temperature was gradually increased and ashed to a constant weight at (650±20).
